Natural Water Drowning can occur in Ocean, Lakes, ponds and rivers. Boating accidents are the most common reasons for drowning or near drowning accidents. Every year, approximately 300 people in the United States die from boating accidents. When enjoying water related activities in natural water settings, the following guidelines should be used:
- Swim in areas where a lifeguard is present
- Use the buddy system-do not swim in natural water settings by yourself
- When boating, make sure the owner/driver of the boat is operating the watercraft in a safe manner
- Wear appropriate life jackets
- Avoid alcohol while enjoying the water
